Quick Facts

Grades Served PK 3 (Pre-school, 3 years of age) through 5th grade. PK 3 was added for the first time in the 2014-2015 school year.
Official Feeder Schools Alice Deal Middle School and Woodrow Wilson High School. (Note that you will be leaving the Shepherd website.)
Admission Process Registration is per regulations and procedure of DCPS.
Application Deadline No application necessary for K-5 unless a student is out-of-boundary, in which case the DCPS out-of- boundary process applies. For PK 3 and PK 4, all DC families must apply for seats via the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) school lottery. See the My School DC website for more information. (Note that you will be leaving the Shepherd website.)
In-Boundary 35% of Shepherd’s students are in-boundary.
Students on Free and Reduced Meals (FARM); English Language Learners (ELL) 28% FARM; 2% ELL.
Before-School or After-School Program School doors open at 8:30 a.m., 15 minutes before class begins. Before-school care is 7:30-8:30 a.m., and after-school care is 3:15-6:30 p.m. Visit the Star Achievers website for more information about our after-care program. What is the Curriculum? Since 2011, we are proud to be certified to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP). For more information about our IB curriculum, visit the IB page of this website. 
Which foreign languages are taught? Spanish or French is taken by all students two to three times weekly. In addition, language classes are offered during Shepherd’s aftercare program, Star Achievers.
What is the arts and music curriculum? What classes are required? Shepherd students take art and music classes weekly as part of the standard curriculum.
What is the teacher training/professional development program? Professional development is intensive, including support for IB PYP, teacher growth, school- and district-initiatives, and identified areas of need.
How long has the principal been leading the school? Ms. Jade Brawley joined the Shepherd community as its new principal for the 2015-16 school year.
What is the dress code and how is it enforced? Shepherd students wear uniforms. The uniform consists of a white collared shirt and navy blue bottom. For more info, visit the Uniform page in the School Life section of this website.
Transportation to and from school? Shepherd is accessible by walking, biking, local bus, and personal car drop-off. Shepherd does not have a parking lot or off-street drop-off area, so please be careful as you drive and use the crosswalk.
