May 18, 2020, Message from Principal Hedlund

Dear Families,

I know all of you have questions on a number of important topics: 5th grade promotion celebration, items your child may have left in school, and whether the Clever platform will be available over the summer months and school year 2020-21. Today Ms. Rottman and I will attend the School Leadership Institute, and we hope to provide you and staff with more information afterwards. Last Tuesday, I was speaking with a parent during packet pick up, and we discussed how this is a time of constant innovation cloaked in uncertainty and ambiguity. I look forward to spending time with you and your children in person soon — it has been too long.

Parent teacher conferences are next Friday, May 22nd, and your homeroom teacher has been in touch about scheduling a time to talk about your student’s progress. Specials teachers are also available to speak with you. If you would like to speak with one of our Specials teachers, please see the following information for scheduling a time:

Art, Carmen Garner: Hi Shepherd families! If you would like to request a conference on May 22, please contact me through e-mail at Carmen.Garner@k12.dc.gov. We can schedule a time to meet using Zoom.

Library, Tiffany Blake: Hello families! If you would like to request a conference on May 22, please contact me through email Tiffany.Blake@k12.dc.gov from 9:00 am-3:30 pm. I will be available during those times and I will use Microsoft Teams to call families.

Music, Anna-Marie Pereira: Hello Parents: If you are interested in having a parent-teacher conference with me, I will happily arrange a time. Please email me at (anna-marie.pereira@k12.dc.gov) with 2 times you are available between 8:30a-3:30p on 5/22, and I will respond with what time works best. I will be using Microsoft Teams, by calling your child or if you rather me call you directly please provide your phone number. Thank you so much.

French, Koutouan Gadie: Bonjour families! I created a Signup Genius below. Parents interested can use the link to sign up. When you sign up, you will automatically receive a Zoom meeting link to join the day of the conference. There are twenty slots available, 10 minutes maximum, from 8:00 am to 3:30 pm.

Spanish, Juan Carols Hernandez: Hola Familia Shepherd. Please sign up with your availability to schedule a meeting through Zoom for May 22nd, Parents Teacher Conference day, so we can discuss your student’s progress, and any suggestion on how we can improve our distant learning procedures for the Spanish class.

Also attached is a formal invitation for students to attend the first-ever virtual Embassy Adoption End of Year Student Celebration! The EAP’s virtual End of Year Celebration will include:

A musical performance by a global artist
An opportunity for students to share about their year in the program
The announcement of the EAP Poster Contest winners (see attached for contest flyer)
