The NW Saturday Academy is a math, computer science and robotics program for DC youth and we are happy to announce that it will be hosted at our own Shepherd Elementary School. Students will learn computer coding by creating alterations, or “mods”, for the popular game Minecraft, boost their math acumen through study in a blended learning model class and get an introduction to the creativity and fun of engineering by building Lego robots.
Families of third, fourth and fifth graders who live in the District are welcome to register. Registration has been very robust, so any additional applicants will added to the waiting list. Classes begin on Saturday, September 26th.
This fall, we will organize several teams to participate in the First Lego League competition. FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL®) introduces young people to the fun and excitement of science and technology while building self-confidence, knowledge, and valuable career and life skills. FLL challenges kids to think like scientists and engineers. Alongside adult Mentors, FLL teams solve problems using engineering concepts, presentation techniques, and robots.
We will be one of only a handful of sites across the entire city that sponsor teams for this world-wide event.
